First established in 2018, Quantum Science uses nanotechnology to develop advanced materials for use in the semiconductor, environmental and biomedical sectors. The company was initially based at Sci-Tech Daresbury’s Campus Technology Hub building. Owing to significant growth since the business was formed, it moved to the larger Techspace One office and laboratory building in early 2021.

Key to this growth has been the development of the best-in-class infrared quantum dots called INFIQ® QDs (quantum dots). The QDs are set to disrupt the multi-billion USD machine vision and sensing markets by their superior performance in optoelectronic devices used for mobile [VR/AR, low light imaging, eye tracking, face ID], automotive [LiDAR, gesture tracking], IoT devices, security and surveillance and spectrometers for healthcare, industrial and environmental applications.

The Scaleup Programme supports a select group of companies on a journey of exponential growth. QS was identified as a highly innovative, ambitious, high-growth oriented company already on its scaling journey, whose innovations and business models will disrupt an existing market, and as a business that is already implementing its international strategy. The initiative will help QS scale up production of its world-leading innovative materials, further enhancing its technical competitiveness and meeting its customers’ evolving needs.

The Scaleup Programme is underpinned by team of 30 high calibre scaleup directors who operate together as a board and provide each of the companies on the programme with a matrix of skills and connectivity. The scaleup directors will help QS structure itself for global growth and work with the company to understand the particular set of needs that it faces on its scaling journey.

QS was also recently awarded an Analysis for Innovators (A4I) 2021 award from Innovate UK. The Innovate UK A4I award is designed to bring together the UK’s leading scientists and facilities, solutions and supports, and provide the best available resources to help QS achieve its growth goal. The A4I award demonstrates the UK’s National Measurement Institute’s recognition and support of QS’ innovative technology. Through access to world-class resources in this award, QS expects to further enhance its technical competitiveness and meet its customers’ needs.

Dr Hao Pang, founder and CEO of QS, commented:

“QS is rapidly becoming a globally recognised tech leader in the QD industry. Our leading INFIQ® QDs, including lead-based QDs and lead-free QDs, have demonstrated the best-in-class performance and industry champion device performance. Winning a place on Innovate UK Edge’s Scaleup Programme and the A4I award are further evidence that QS’ leading infrared QD sensing tech will transform the UK and the world.

“I am passionate about the scaleup journey ahead with Innovate UK’s scaleup team and the support that we continue to receive at Sci-Tech Daresbury.”

Maxine Adam, head of business growth at Innovate UK, said:

“Our work with the QS team is a great example of just how much value this programme can add to the endeavours of the business leaders we support. The inputs are varied and blend strategic thinking with invaluable hands-on tactical guidance, to create outcomes that deliver real commercial advantage. It’s a pleasure working with QS at this pivotal time for their business.

“Admission onto the Scaleup Programme is a rigorous and highly selective process. To be eligible, selectors look for innovative, ambitious, high-growth oriented companies that are already on their scaling journey. QS is a perfect candidate in this respect and, together with the Enterprise Europe Network, we are looking forward to helping it scale up, drive growth, and realise its potential as a high-performing and world-leading business.”

Sci-Tech Daresbury is a world class location for high-tech business and leading-edge science based in the Liverpool City Region.  It provides a unique environment for innovation and business growth, with knowledge sharing, collaboration and networking

Home to the ground-breaking STFC Daresbury Laboratory as well as nearly 150 high-tech companies, the site was originally established in 2006. In December 2010 a new private-public joint-venture partnership was created to spearhead the longer-term development of the campus. Partners in the private-public joint-venture partnership are developers, Langtree, Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), and Halton Borough Council.

The campus was granted Enterprise Zone status in April 2012. Enterprise Zone status allows business rates to be reinvested in the campus, potentially creating up to 15,000 skilled jobs and providing funding for new specialist office, laboratory and technical space. Enterprise Zone status will also allow the campus to leverage more than £150 million in private sector investment.
