Meet the Team: Alan Evans, Strategic Commissioner for Growth, Wirral Council

Put a face and a story behind a name. We asked Alan to briefly explain his role and sector in no more than 400 words. So grab a coffee and have a quick read.

DSC_0015I have worked at Wirral Council for 12 years and have been in my current post of Strategic Commissioner for Growth since November 2016. My role involves setting out the council’s strategic aims and plans for growth and delivering the Wirral Growth Plan, part of Wirral 2020, the council’s five-year strategy. Our key focus is on outcomes for jobs, investment, supporting businesses, skills and economic growth.

I am keen to drive new and more effective ways of working through our commissioning activity and to focus on strong collaboration with local and regional partners to maximise the reach and impact of our work. Under a new operating model, we are working in close partnership with Wirral Chamber, Growth Board-businesses, Liverpool Vision and LCR partners to jointly deliver growth outcomes. Wirral Chamber represents the business voice of Wirral and will remain a key delivery partner for us, while Liverpool Vision and Liverpool LEP’s sector leads and experts provide us with invaluable knowledge and support.

Our key priorities in terms of inward investment at present include building a strong awareness of Wirral’s strength in appropriate new markets such as China through partnership working with Liverpool Vision and other LCR partners to market our region. We are also fostering closer working relationships with Government departments such as DIT (formerly UKTI).

Our Growth Plan sets out our priorities for development and already we are seeing many positive outcomes including The Contact Company, Wirral Met’s new campus, Wirral Waters, and the continued success of Marine Point at New Brighton. We are working continually to put building blocks in place for business growth and to build on the strengths we already have in place.

Wirral Council has a vision to revitalise Birkenhead, creating a vibrant and high quality destination worthy of its magnificent history as a centre of innovation and manufacturing excellence. With a focus on three areas we are seeking partners to restore Birkenhead as the beating heart of Wirral – the core of retail, employment and entertainment options within the borough. With its perfect positioning on the banks of the River Mersey, overlooking Liverpool’s incredible skyline, Birkenhead presents unrivalled opportunities for huge regeneration. Looking ahead I anticipate further developments at Wirral Waters and the formation of a property company to drive regeneration across the borough.

My key message therefore is that Wirral is open for business and I will be ensuring this message is delivered.
